Multiple distinctions were received by Filamerian campus journalist in various press conferences and competitions during the first semester of the current school year solidifying their skills in writing, publishing, photojournalism, and in other fields of journalism.
Hosted by the Philippine Information Agency 6, Journ Talk Series mark the 48th year of the government agency in training the campus journalists across the region, dividing the online training in two editions: College (September 25-27) and High School (October 2 to 4).
College campus journalists made a mark in the training after receiving awards: The Hillside Echo (HSE) winners included Jan Karl Velado, Promising in English Copyreading; Kiervy James Barroa, Promising in English Sports Writing; Serram Delfin, Promising in Filipino Editorial Writing; and The Herald (TH) of College of Arts and Sciences editor Danica Rose Bernal, Promising in feature Writing.
For High School, The Hillside Echo – Senior (THES) editor Jasmine Benecio claimed the Most Promising in Editorial Cartooning and Janiela Chantelle Ballinas pocketed the Promising award in English Photojournalism.
Senior High School journalists of THES made its inaugural participation in the University of San Agustin’s USA Publications Gusting Journalism Seminar Workshop last November 16, 2024 which featured lectures on news, feature, opinion writing, photojournalism, cartooning and digital art delivered by distinguished speakers.
Five distinctions were accumulated by the student journalists in their inaugural participation in the event: Hyrisha Kaye Coniendo, Second Place in English Sports Writing; Geomarie Dave Centillo, Second Place in English Column Writing; Fiona Faye Fantilaga, Second Place in Filipino Column writing; Ayeesha Baguio, Fourth Place in English News Writing; and Candie Villar, Fourth Place in Digital Arts.
Filamerians made waves in the PIA 6 College Press Conference (COPRE) and 1st High School Press Conference (HSPC) after securing multiple recognitions across various disciplines held at Iloilo City, November 28.
For college, Filamerians bulls-eyed several awards: Migsmarl Lozada, Fourth Place in English Photojournalism and Fretch John Mijares secured the Third Place in English Sports Writing.
THES journalists on the other hand took home four individual awards: Hyrisha Kaye Coniendo, Champion in English News Writing; Geomarie Dave Centillo, Second Place in English Column Writing; Jasmine Benecio, Third Place in Filipino Feature Writing; and Hillary jean Dumagpi, Fourth Place in English Feature Writing.
For publication awards, HSE’s magazine was recognized as the Fourth Place Best Magazine in the region, while THES’ Facebook Page, took home the Second Place as Best High School Publication Page, and its online newsletter was awarded as Fifth Place Best Online Newsletter.
Furthermore, THES adviser, Jose Erwin Borbon was hailed as Hall of Fame awardee in the Best Performing School Paper Adviser of the region, receiving the distinction four times since 2020.
COPRE and HSPC is a regional press conference that gathers hundreds of campus journalists from Western Visayas.
HSE staffers and adviser nipped distinctions in the national press conference, 23rd Word Cup Philippines and 8th Journalism Masterclass held at Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan last December 5-7.
Kyle Laurence Ibañez claimed two awards as Champion in English Sports writing and Third Place in English News Writing; Ily Serram Delfin, Second Place in Filipino Sports Writing and Third Place in Filipino Column Writing; Aaron Matthew Casugbo, Third Place in English Sports Writing; Ma. Estelle Vaflor, Third Place in Filipino Sports Writing; Vaflor and Ibañez were also recognized as Honorable Mention in Mobile Journalism; while HSE adviser, Michael Jay Demingoy was hailed as First Place in English News Writing and Third Place in English Sports Writing under adviser’s category.
The multiple recognitions received by Filamerian campus journalists is a testament to the skills and commitment of the students in the journalism craft, further cementing FCU as a powerhouse of campus journalism.
