FCU holds two-day seminar on curriculum enhancement, holistic assessment

Faculty members of Filamer Christian University (FCU) participated in a two-day seminar-workshop aimed at strengthening curriculum design and enhancing assessment practices in higher and basic education units.

Held on June 25–26, 2026, the activity featured the themes “Strengthening Curriculum Foundations and Quality Syllabi Design” attended by Higher Education teaching force on the first day, and “Balancing Traditional and Alternative Assessment for Holistic Learning” on the second day participated along with Basic Education faculty members

“We have to be reminded of this processes of making effective syllabi because our education is dynamic and evolving,” Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Minnie Chan stated in her welcome message, emphasizing the relevance of revisiting institution-based syllabus and standards set by Commission on Higher Education.

The opening day focused on improving the quality of course syllabi and ensuring alignment between learning outcomes, content, and assessment strategies.

Participants attended lecture sessions and workshops facilitated by Capiz State University’s (CapSu) Main Campus’ Directress of Instruction, Dr. Hazel Joaquin, who discussed the fundamentals and updated guidelines in syllabi making, as well as strategies for aligning learning outcomes with instructional content and assessment methods.

The workshop concluded with an output-making session where faculty members applied the concepts learned.

The second day shifted its focus to assessment, highlighting the importance of integrating both traditional and alternative methods to promote holistic student learning.

CapSU-Pontevedra Dean of College of Education, Arts and Sciences, Dr. Judel V. Protacio, led discussions on alternative assessment methods, effective implementation strategies, integrating various assessment approaches, developing Tables of Specifications (TOS), and conducting item analysis.

Faculty members also participated in a workshop on developing quality assessment tools where representatives from various departments presented their outputs sharing their respective TOS.

“As educators, we continuously strive to improve the quality of teaching and learning. And we have to adapt to whatever changes our education system requires us ti do, including implementing good assessment tools,” Dr. Protacio said.

The seminar-workshop reflects FCU’s continuing commitment to academic excellence by equipping its faculty with updated knowledge and practical skills in curriculum development and assessment, ensuring quality instruction and meaningful learning experiences for students.
