In celebration of National Heritage Month, Filamer Christian University (FCU) conducted a meaningful lecture and essay writing activity as supported by the Commission on Higher Education aimed at strengthening students’ appreciation of Filipino culture, local history, and identity with the theme’ “Roots and Horizons: Our Shared Heritage, Our Collective Future,” on May 28, 2026 at the FCU Gym.
The program featured a lecture delivered by guest speaker Local Government Operations Officer V of the Department of Interior and Local Government – Capiz Erwin Bonifacio, a prominent figure in the promotion of local history and an accomplished author, who shared valuable insights on the significance of local history and the role of the youth in safeguarding Capisnon identity and traditions.
“Capiz played an important role in a broadest story of Philippine’s nationhood. The province of Capiz was not a mere passive observer of national events but also an active participant in countries struggle for reforms, self-determination and nation-building,” Mr. Bonifacio emphasized highlighting the big role of Capiz in the Philippine history.
During his talk, he also emphasized that heritage is more than historical structures and artifacts, noting that language, values, customs, and collective memories also form part of the nation’s identity.
“Progress did not come easily but was built to hardship, cooperation, and perseverance. Historical memories serve as our moral guide–the stories present in local history teaches us lesson about leadership, courage, mistakes, injustices, resilience, and solidarity,” guest speaker added.
He encouraged students to become active participants in preserving and promoting the Filipino and Capiznon culture in their respective communities.
“By reflecting on the early successes and failures of the early generation, communities become better prepared to confront present challenges that shape more informed future,” the local historian emphasized.
Additionally, the resource person donated copies of his book, “Courage Amidst Chaos: The Untold Story of Exploits, Heroism, and Enduring Legacy of WWII USAFFE Soldier and Panay Guerilla Major Jose G. Falco,” to the FCU Library as a gesture of support for historical education and the preservation of Filipino heritage and local history.
Following the lecture, students from different departments participated in an essay writing activity in the afternoon that allowed them to express their perspectives on preserving national heritage in the age of globalization and artificial intelligence.
The activity challenged participants to reflect on how modern innovations can coexist with efforts to protect and promote Filipino traditions and cultural values.
University officials expressed their gratitude to all participants and organizers who contributed to the success of the celebration. They also reiterated FCU’s commitment to fostering cultural awareness and nationalism among students through meaningful academic and co-curricular activities.
The event gathered students, faculty members, and university officials in a celebration that highlighted the importance of preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage amid the fast-changing and AI-driven modern world.
Spearheaded by FCU Socio-Cultural Affairs Office, the school’s National Heritage Month celebration served not only as an educational activity but also as a reminder of the shared responsibility of every Filamerian in protecting and valuing the nation’s heritage for future generations.
